ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- A 44-year-old Montgomery County firefighter is facing charges of solicting sex from a woman he thought was a 16-year-old girl, county police spokesperson Lucille Baur said Thursday night.
Wayne Mothershead of Monroe Street in Rockville was arrested July 20 and released the same day after a $100,000 bond was posted.
During an investigation an internet advertisement was posted for prostitution on July 15 by a female police officer posing as a 16-year-old girl. Police reported that on July 17 an e-mailed response was received from a man interested in meeting with the believed-to-be 16-year-old girl.
A meeting was arranged for the morning of July 20 at the Holbrook Shopping Center in Gaithersburg. Mothershead acknowledged that he knew the ad was for a 16-year-old and that he agreed to pay for sexual services received from her, police reported. When he arrived at the shopping center, police said, he was arrested and charged him with soliciting a minor for sex.
Detectives from the Montgomery County have been investigating the solicitation of minors for sexual purposes. They have been conducting stings using internet classified sites and social networking sites.
Since it was initiated a few months ago, there have been 20 felony arrests that carry a maximum 10-year sentence.
