WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Walking into a room full of strangers could soon be a thing of the past. Now, holding up a cell phone allows people to see names, titles and even hobbies. It's just one example of augmented reality.
"You'll be able to walk down a normal city street and actually be able to see true, real world, real time information about the people around you," said Lewis Shepherd with Microsoft.
He says it's like having access to a computer at all times, and the technology is ready to go. There's a cell phone application for the nearest Subway Station. Another allows users to see what people in the area are Twittering.
Even the military is using augmented reality.
"If you're familiar with modern first persons shooter video games, then you're very cognizant of what it's like to be a soldier in battle today," said Shepherd.
But it doesn't stop there. Soon, people will wear cameras to get more information.
"We're now building smaller and much more powerful projectors that can be worn, or embedded into clothing, or embedded into objects that are portable," he said.
There are privacy concerns, but Shepherd says the idea is that the information people see is only the information they've made public.
