MCLEAN, Va. (WUSA)-- Customers have been pouring in to car dealerships thinking the brakes were being put on the popular "Cash for Clunkers" program.

Lindsey Pendleton rushed to buy her an Equinox at Koons Chevrolet off Leesburg Pike, "I almost cried; I thought we weren't going to qualify. We got here just in time. We made it."

Dealerships opened their doors Friday thinking time was running out too. Alex Perdikis is the Executive Vice President of Koons Automotive, "We were thinking we were unable to offer customers the program because the money was running out and the program was ending."

However, new money could be filtering in as the House rushed to approve 2 billion dollars for the program. Approval that happened well before Mohammed Atrous rushed into get his new car.

It's unclear how long the program will be around giving customers up to a $4,500 rebate for trading in your old car for a more fuel efficient vehicle.

Atrous did not want to take any chances of being left behind trading his 12 mile per gallon clunker for a Malibu Chevy that gets 33 miles to the gallon. "This is the time; [I] came out here right away," said Atrous.

Koons Automotive sold 290 vehicles in the "Cars for Clunkers" program. 100 vehicles were sold in the Tyson's Corner area alone. They say the program has helped double sales.

The Senate has its say next week, but the White House says any deals made this weekend, will be honored.

Dealers say the program is bittersweet and a bit frustrating. It does wonders for sales, but completing that sale, they say, takes hours and some get rejected because of clerical errors or other red tape.
