(WUSA) -- 13 of the District's public schools are getting ready to undergo a transformation. Over the next year, they'll become what Mayor Adrian Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee are calling theme based catalyst schools.
"One of the things we need to do is not just create a better school system, but create a better system of excellent schools," says Mayor Fenty. The schools will be broken up into three groups: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math -- or STEM; Arts Integration; and World Cultures.
Schools needed to submit proposals that clearly outlined their plan to integrate one of the three theme into their curricula. The goal is to engage students to inspire and motivate them to learn. Here's how they will break down:
STEM Schools
-- Beers Elementary School (Ward 7)
-- Burroughs Education Campus (Ward 5)
-- Emery Educational Campus (Ward 5)
-- Langdon Education Campus (Ward 5)
-- Malcolm X Elementary School (Ward 8)
-- Whittier Education Campus (Ward 4)
Arts Integration
-- Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School (Ward 6)
-- Sousa Middle School (Ward7)
-- Takoma Educational Campus Preschool (Ward 4)
-- Tyler Elementary School (Ward 6)
World Cultures
-- Columbia Heights Education Campus (Ward 1)
-- Eaton Elementary School (Ward 3)
-- Payne Elementary School (Ward 6)
The schools will spend the 2009-2010 school year to plan for their new curricula. The entire program is funded by the DC Public Education Fund through the support of The Philip L. Graham Fund, the Euguene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation and the CityBridge Foundation.
