Metro General Manager Clashes With Washington Post Over Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- At a press conference outside Metro Headquarters, Metro's General Manager John Catoe delivered some angry words towards the Washington Post.

Catoe says a recent story in the Post pointed to widespread failures of the monitoring system designed to prevent trains from crashing into one another.

The article claimed Metro technicians detected malfunctions with train monitoring circuits as early as July 11th. If true, the report contradicts Catoe's statements last Thursday; all three thousand circuits had been inspected without problem.

The article's assertions were based on internal Metro documents obtained by the Washington Post. John Catoe says the Post article was more than inaccurate, "The Washington Post speculation that we have a widespread problem is a gross falsification."

"This was an example of someone taking information, not understanding the information and misreporting it."

As President of Metro Union Local 689, Jackie Jeter doesn't know what to think.

"Right now, I don't know. They're not articulating anything to us as far as the testing results that they have found out. As far as the article that was put in the paper, we don't know whether there's truth to that or not."

Regardless, the cause of June's accident is still under investigation and speculation over the cause is causing headaches for those in charge.

When contacted, the Washington Post gave 9NEWS NOW this comment: "We firmly stand behind the reporting in this story."
