TEMPLE HILLS, Md. -- A 24-year-old man was killed Saturday night when the motorcycle he was operating struck a van on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway just north of Branch Avenue.

Maryland State Police said excessive speed played a role in the accident, which was reported at 7:08 p.m. The victim was ejected from the motorcycle after it hit the van and then a guardrail.

Nearly three hours later traffic was still being re-routed and the Beltway was backed up for about two miles from Exit 7 Route 5 to Exit 9 Andrews Air Force Base.
