CABIN JOHN, Md. (WUSA) - Police have a driver in custody after a deadly crash on the Beltway.
The crash happened late Tuesday night on the Outer Loop, just before the American Legion bridge.
Police say a 2004 silver Jeep Grand Cherokee struck a red Nissan Frontier from behind, causing it to lose control and plunge over the guardrail. The Nissan plummeted approximately 60 feet down an embankment and came to rest on it's roof.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to Suburban Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The passenger was pronounced at the scene.
After attempting to flee the scene of the accident, Kelli Russ Loos, the driver of the Jeep, was involved in another collision on the Virginia side of the bridge. Virginia State Police investigated the collision and took Loos into custody for driving under the influence. Officials say Troopers and witnesses at the scene identified Loos's Jeep Grand Cherokee as the vehicle responsible for the earlier accident in Maryland.
Maryland State Police say the driver of the Nissan Frontier was 39-year-old Gradys Mendoza. The passenger has been identified as 37-year-old Franklin Manazanares. Both victims were from Springfield, Virginia.
Maryland State Police have obtained a warrant charging Loos with failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury. Loos is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention center for the DUI charge and is awaiting extradition to Maryland.
