WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Seconds after a spokeswoman began defending former DC mayor Marion Barry during a press conference outside the Wilson building, a woman shouted out.

Donna Watts-Brighthaupt showed up when she heard from the media that she was the topic of the press conference. The former girlfriend of Marion Barry has been caught in the spotlight after Barry was arrested Saturday by U.S. Park Police for allegedly stalking Watts-Brighthaupt.

Since the weekend incident, reports surfaced questioning how Watts-Brighthaupt was employed by Barry using taxpayer funds after they began dating. The DC Council member hired her in October, two months after the two reportedly met.

During the press conference, Barry's spokeswoman Natalie Williams accused the 40-year-old Watts-Brighthaupt of being unstable. She also said the woman has admitted to seeing a psychologist.

"That is not true!" said Watts-Brighthaupt upon hearing that statement. "That is not true."

Williams continued with a long list of examples defending Barry's decision to hire Watts-Brighthaupt.

"For the record, it is not unusual nor is it illegal for council members to award contracts to family members or friends if they are qualified," she said. "Mr. Barry believed Ms. Watts was qualified. Her rambled statements to the media are proof of her instability."

Barry is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. His attorneys say they are certain that prosecutors will choose not to pursue the stalking charges.
