CLARKSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- Shiane Dixon, 12, had just joined her brother, Hassan, on the Track and Field Wall of Fame at Rocky Hill Middle School. That six minute, five second mile is the last race Shiane will ever run.
The bubbly and bright student athlete was killed in an early morning crash near Richmond Monday morning. Police say her mom, Diane, lost control of the SUV she was driving. Shiane was ejected and thrown into the path of a tractor trailer and killed.
The head of Rocky Hill's PE Department, Mike Wells says,"It's adevastating loss, to lose somebody with that kind of character; the friends she had, her support system. She was a friend to everybody."
Shiane's 16-year-old brother, Hassan, a senior at Northwest High School in Germantown, was hurt in the crash, but he is expected to survive. So are their friends, who were on the trip too: 18-year-old Jordan Lusane and 12-year-old Taylor Scott.
They were all belted in. Shiane, riding in the rear cargo area of the Navigator, was not.
Diane Dixon was the PTA Treasurer and NAACP rep at Rocky Hill Middle.
"It's a devastating loss to our community," Principal Steve Whiting says.
Dixon was not only involved with her children's education, she would also tutor other struggling kids in math.
"We're working with the county to provide counseling for anyone who might need it," Whiting says.
As he looked at the Wall of Fame, Wells says, at only 12-years-old, Shiane was just coming into her own.
"She's been running her whole life and was definitely scholarship material. But not only that, she epitomized everything you would want a student athlete to be."
Shiane actually skipped a grade and would have been an eighth grader this fall.
The school is planning a vigil in her honor Tuesday, June 30th:
