RICHMOND, Va (AP) -- Mississippi's Republican governor sees high-flying Democrats getting their comeuppance in the Virginia governor's race this fall, just as they did 16 years ago.
After historic losses to Democrats last fall, Republicans are desperate to bounce back.
Gov. Haley Barbour predicted the turnaround starts this fall with Republicans elected governor in Virginia and New Jersey.
In Virginia Monday to help Republican Bob McDonnell raise about $250,000, Barbour said a popular new Democratic president will help McDonnell's foe, Creigh Deeds, in the governor's race.
But Barbour noted that in 1993, a fresh, shiny Democratic president, Bill Clinton, aided the prohibitive favorite, Democrat Mary Sue Terry, in Virginia's governor's race.
Republican George Allen routed Terry and began years of GOP dominance in Virginia.
