WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Clergy members stormed out of the DC Council chambers Tuesday after the legislators voted 12 to 1 to approve a same sex marriage bill. The measure doesn't make gay marriages legal in the District, but the bill would recognize legal same sex marriages that are performed in other States.
Only Ward 8 Councilman, Marion Barry, voted against the bill. He chose to side with his Pastor, while reminding the gay community that he has been among their staunchest supporters over the years.
The two openly gay council members, David Catania and Jim Graham, both made emotional appeals in support of the same sex marriage proposal with Catania predicting the District will eventually have its own law legalizing same sex marriages.
