WASHINGTON (WUSA) - Howard University may be the latest educational institution hit with a case of the H1N1 flu.
In a letter posted on the University website, Howard University president Sydney A. Ribeau confirms a student has been classified as a probable case of H1N1 influenza after traveling outside the United States in April. School officials say the student has recovered but has been isolated while they wait for test results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ribeau says the University is taking proactive steps to sanitize the areas like the student's residence hall as well as common areas. Also, students living close to the student have been informed of the preliminary diagnosis and have been given information about symptoms, prevention and treatment. Students and members of the community with high fever, body ache, sore throat, nausea and diarrhea are advised to see a doctor immediately.
The online statement encourages students and employees to adopt standard sanitary practices like covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, washing hands thoroughly, and avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth. Antibacterial soap pumps have also been placed in strategic locations throughout the school.
Kerry Ann Hamilton, spokesperson for Howard University, tells 9 NEWS NOW classes will continue as scheduled, and at this time no activities have been cancelled.
