FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) -- We hear layoff announcements all the time. But as big companies are announcing job cuts, many in our area are looking to hire new workers. None more so than General Dynamics: the government-affiliated behemoth based in Falls Church, Va.

"We're doing really well," according to Hope Murray, a recruiter with General Dynamics Information Technology. Murray has her work cut out for her: the company is looking to hire over 350 people in the Washington area. "We're constantly winning new business and contracts," Murray said, "which opens the doors for us to have a lot of hiring."

General Dynamics currently has the largest number of job openings in the Washington area on CareerBuilder.com (which is partially owned by Gannett, the parent company of W*USA and wusa9.com). Here is a look at who else is hiring, with the number of jobs posted for our region:

  • General Dynamics (Falls Church, Va.) - 202 local jobs
  • Lockheed Martin (Bethesda, Md.) - 170 local jobs
  • Booz Allen Hamilton (McLean, Va.) - 107 local jobs
  • Accenture (Reston, Va. & Washington DC) - 64 local jobs
  • Verizon Business (Ashburn, Va.) - 63 local jobs

As for regionally based companies, the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates is looking for 18 more employees. Montgomery County, Md. based MedImmune has 30 openings. And in Virginia, Arlington-based language education company Rosetta Stone is expanding and has 39 openings.

One important to remember: when you have a lot of openings, you get a lot of interest. "A help desk job," says Murray, "we'll get 50 résumés for that."

Most companies with a lot of openings have a wide-range of open positions. In high demand: I.T. workers, contract administrators, accountants, and receptionists. General Dynamics is filling its vacancies pretty quickly, between four to six weeks from job posting to hiring.
