WASHINGTON, DC (AP) -- Metro officials say the transit agency likely will be reimbursed $1.5 million less than requested for enhanced service during the inauguration.

Metro requested $2.5 million from the federal government to help cover expenses. But Metro Chief Financial Officer Carol Kissal says under current federal guidelines the agency will receive less than $1 million.

The transit system spent $5.2 million more than usual from Jan. 17 to Jan. 20. And although Metro collected more fare money, officials say it wasn't enough to cover the extra costs.

Metro carried more people on Inauguration Day than on any other day in its history, with a total of more than 1.5 million trips on rail, buses and paratransit.
