DUMFRIES, Va. (WUSA)--- Residents of Lake Crest, a community of townhouse and single family homes located off Dumfries Road, are watching trash pile up on residential streets and backyards. The management company stopped collecting it earlier this month.
"They just left a note ... that service is suspended," said resident, Sunita Sharma. "I called them, and they transferred me to someone else, and they didn't know what was going on," she said.
Trash removal is paid for by fees paid to the local homeowners' association, representatives of which could not be reached by 9NEWS NOW.
"Why am I paying dues? They're not picking up my garbage, so why am I paying them the money?" asked resident Kim Wolf outside her townhome.
The management company that had providing the service had no comment for 9NEWS NOW, but a representative did add she expects service to resume next week.
"I think it's terrible. I think it's a health hazard," said 75-year-old resident, Sandra Tobias. "We're going to wind up with rats. The water is going to be leached into by the debris."
Some residents have been helping elderly neighbors by picking up their trash and running it to the local dump.
"It's crazy. It's an inconvenience, a real inconvenience, especially if you don't have a truck or anything like that. Things may leak. It's a big inconvenience," said resident, Zach Martell.
