FORT MONMOUTH, N.J. (AP) -- Defense Department officials say it will cost at least another $20 million to close New Jersey's Fort Monmouth. That's how much the Defense Energy Support Center has agreed to pay a Massachusetts-based company for the early termination of a contract. Ameresco has already performed about $25 million worth of work converting 18 buildings from steam boilers to a geothermal heating system. The company can appeal the payment. The cost to close the Army post has soared from the 2005 estimate of $780 million to the most recent estimate of $1.6 billion. Fort Monmouth is set to close by 2011 as part of a nationwide base-closing plan. It's mission will be transferred to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
