OCEAN CITY, Md. (WUSA) --- The Ocean City Beach Patrol is looking for a few good men and women to guard the town's 10 miles of beaches this summer, and some candidates are coming from as far away as Canada.
Starting pay for a probationary guard this year is $13.25/hour, with a raise to $14.42 after probation. No previous certification or experience is necessary.
Ocean City Beach Patrol will conduct a pre-employment physical skills evaluation on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Salisbury University.
Those meeting qualifying standards will be appointed to a Beach Patrol Surf Rescue Academy, which is taught in Ocean City between mid-May and June where all training and certifications are provided.
This Sunday candidates will swim, perform simulated water rescues, and demonstrate their running ability. All water-related activities will take place in an indoor pool with all running done outside.
Pre-registration is not required, but it is recommended. "This is going to be one of our biggest tests ever with already 46 people pre-registered," says Kristin Joson, the patrol's public relations coordinator. She added that one of the patrol's crew chiefs is from Canada, and he plans to drive down with a van full of Canadians seeking summer employment.
The patrol will have more than 180 guards working this summer.
To pre-register or for additional information, interested men and women, 17 years of age and older, should contact the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
