WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- For some, Valentine's Day may just be the holiday you have to remember.
At Johnson's Florist and Garden Center, Mark Jenkins will tell you there has been a downturn in business the past year.
Mark says that because, "We're a family-owned business; we try and weigh the good times with the bad and plan."
Planning and a lot of preparation places florists in a position to profit even in difficult financial times. For Johnson's, it makes Valentine's Day one of the most important holidays of the year.
It also makes for an even picker customer, like Sarah Wallerstein. Her annual Valentine's day girl's night is scaling back this year.
Sarah says, "I think people understand that there are more things that are more important than parties."
And that's why Johnson's hopes to make selecting out the perfect gift a bit easier on the customer.
Mark says, "We'll have tons of things that people can grab, we'll have associates to help them pick out things. Instead of getting teddy bears, chocolates and balloons, they may only do 2 out of the 3 things this year."
Mark warns despite money being tight, showing up empty handed could be a bigger price to pay.
"You can't comprise; you have to do something for this holiday, or you're in the dog house, Mark says."
