WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)--DC School Chancellor Michelle Rhee briefed the city council on a proposed five year action plan--a living document--she says will change and
grow with the school system.
Some veteran teachers say the heavy emphasis on performance reviews will force them out of the system.
Mary Collins, a field representative with the Washington Teachers Union, says morale is poor, especially among the district's older teachers, many African American.
"They're saying that if you're African American and over 50 you don't know anything, can't do anything, won't ever do anything under this regime."
The President of the Washington Teacher's Union told the council the reviews are a big concern-- but his inbox is filled with messages from teachers worried about their safety.
"I got 14 calls this morning, from teacher who are concerned about the safety and discipline in the schools. Many of our teachers are simply afraid,"George Parker says.
Three students were stabbed at Anacostia High School yesterday--there were violent incidents at Hart and Ballou this week too.
"I think this has to take priority."
Rhee says she is working with Police Chief Cathy Lanier to address the school safety issue--clearly--they are not happy with the current security contractor.
"If you talk to everyone, from students, to teachers, to parents, no one is pleased with the quality of security services we are receiving from our current contractor."
Rhee says there needs to be improved training and clearly established protocols to keep schools safety.
Parker suggests alternative schools for kids with severe behavior problems.
The Chancellor says improving school safety is part the 6 step action plan which hasn't been finalized yet.
Her staff will be meeting with principals and school staff over the next 8 weeks. Those comments, and suggestions gathered at a series of community forums will be included in the plan which should be finalized early next year.
