GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- Two months of elbow grease and hard work has transformed Vikki Robertson's Gaithersburg home into the place she always wanted.

"The walls were white. We had junk all over the house," she says.

She wanted her home to look like a palace on a pauper's budget. That's where Susan Featherstone-Shcemm and Sherry Burton-Ways of Design Scheme Interiors came in.

"You have to be very, very realistic and up front. And just decide okay, what can I live with, what can I not live with," says designer Sherry Burton-Ways.

The tag team designers had to live within a budget, less than $5,000 to update area.

Partner Susan Featherstone-Schemm says, "It can be done if the homeowner is willing to put in a little effort themselves."

Instead of going with the interior designer's contractors, Vikki got her walls painted, purchased appliances and furniture to keep the costs down.

Sherry and Susan shopped at discount stores and stayed away from custom designed options to do their part.

By projects end, they spend $2,000 to give the kitchen a new look. The eating nook is much more inviting now after an $800 update. One-thousand dollars gave the family room a whole new meaning. Paint and silk draperies came to just under $500 for the living room.

And as for Vikki, "I love it! I love it! I can come home and it just feels like it's all worth it."

She spent a little and got a lot, the home of her dreams.
