DC's Gun Ban to Be Decided Once and For All

WASHINGTON, Dc (WUSA) Do DC residents have the right to bear arms? The Supreme Court is expected to weigh in as early as Thursday.

No matter what side of the issue you're on, everyone agrees it will be an historic moment. It will be the first time the justices will weigh in on the second ammendment and more specifically, who has the right to bear arms.

Firearms instructor James Wiggins believes every DC resident should be able to carry a handgun. He say "if they take the proper precautions of having to take a gun course and learn the safety procedures of using a firearm, they should be able to protect their family."

Not every DC resident agrees. Some say it will only lead to more violence and more accidental death involving kids.

On what could be the eve before the supreme Court weighs in on a legal challenge to DC's controversial ban on handguns, George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley predicts, "I think the justices are leaning in favor of an individual's right."

But he also adds, "you shouldn't go out and buy an uzi just yet." Should the ban be struck down, Turley believes it will come with limitations, "in terms of the types of guns you can buy, perhaps the number you can buy, and perhaps the background checks that might be required. So many of these laws could still be sustained even with the recognition of gun ownership."

Turley says the high court could also remand the case back to a lower court, something that would anger and disaapoint people who want this issue resolved once and for all.
