ACCOKEEK, Md. (WUSA)-- Eight people were killed and at least four others were injured when a car plowed into a crowd which had gathered to watch a drag race on Route 210 in the Accokeek section of Prince George's County.
Witnesses say the accident happened around three o'clock Saturday morning.
Prince George's County Police Department spokesman Corporal Clinton Copeland described the scene as one of the worst he's ever seen.
He went on to say, "This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it's a very tragic situation."
Prince George's County Police say a tractor-trailer truck driving by a short time later may have also struck someone on the roadside as it tried to avoid the crash scene near Pine Lane.
The accident forced police to shut down route 210 for several hours.
Investigators will remain on the scene throughout the day to try and recreate the accident.
