WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) - Councilman Kwame Brown told 9NEWS NOW on Tuesday that he thinks it's time for Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi to step down.
Brown is the first elected official to part with Mayor Adrian Fenty who continued to support the District's top money man on Tuesday.
Brown's remarks come after the Washington Post disclosed that the Office of Tax and Revenue issued property tax refund checks of $2.46 million without the required court orders and sometimes to companies that didn't even exist.
At least six such checks were issued from October 1999 to June 2000 when Gandhi was promoted from director of Tax and Revenue to the city's Chief Financial Officer.
Gandhi is refusing comment on the Washington Post story.
He immediately demanded resignations from the current Tax Office Director and her immediate management team after it was disclosed that up to $30 million had been stolen by employees over the years in a property tax refund scam.
