LEESBURG, Va. (WUSA9) -- Loudoun County Chief Fire Marshal Linda Hale says a 20-year-old man has been arrested for setting off a pipe bomb on a golf course in Leesburg.
Austin A. Callahan of Leesburg has been arrested on '1 count of a class 5 Felony involving the manufacture, possession, or use of fire bombs or explosive materials or devices'.
The incident happened at 9:48 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20 in the 43800 block of Olympic Boulevard, according to Hale. The fire marshal's office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms investigated after receiving calls about a loud explosion. Officials found what was believed to be remains of a pipe bomb.
The next day authorities executed search warrants at a home on Sandpiper Place in the River Creek community, says Hale. According to Hale, an explosive devise was found inside the home. Personnel temporarily suspended their search until bomb squad technicians and other crew could arrive on the scene to help. The device was rendered safe that afternoon.
