Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, August 15, 2013 (WUSA9)
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Thursday morning, a woman went into labor on I-270 southbound near Route 118.
Maryland State Police say the car was on the shoulder when the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Montgomery County Fire officials say the baby was born before emergency crews arrived. Mother and baby were then transported to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, say police and fire officials.
Mother, baby and father are doing okay.
The hospital's clinical nurse manager in labor and delivery Amber Richter told us that the hospital has about half a dozen people who deliver outside of the hospital every year. She couldn't say exactly how many people gave birth in cars but she said that the hospital sees several cases a year.
As far as the mother who gave birth on Thursday morning, Richter said that it was not the mother's first child. "She was a term delivery and she was just trying to stay at home as along as she could. She did not want any medical intervention, she wanted a natural birth and she got a natural birth!" shared Richter.
Richter said that the family was on the way to the hospital when they had to stop on I-270.
We hope to have more details here soon.
