CULPEPER, Va. (WUSA) - A local man has been charged with drug possession with intent to distribute after authorities discovered approximately 60 marijuana plants in the garage at his home, according to Culpeper Police.
On Oct. 1 at about 9 p.m., police knocked on the door of a home on the 20000 block of Williams Drive in Culpeper. When resident Peter I. Gates, 34, opened the door and spotted the officers, he slammed the door shut.
Police entered and secured the home, executed a search warrant and seized approximately 60 marijuana plants in the garage. Police found several ounces of packaged marijuana that had an estimated street value of $2,000.
Also seized were two handguns, an assault rifle and more than $3,000 in cash.
Gates is charged with possession with intent to distribute more than five pounds of marijuana and possession of a firearm while in possession of more than one pound of marijuana.
Gates lived at the home with family members. Investigators described the garage where the marijuana plants were found as an "elaborate grow operation." The street value of all of the plants combined is estimated at $180,000.
Gates has been released on a $10,000 secured bond.
