WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Some nuggets to ponder exactly one week before Redskins training camp begins.

1) The Redskins secondary is very, very bad. It will lose this team plenty of games. Obviously the $36 million salary cap hit from the NFL altered the franchise's plan to upgrade a unit in dire need of a makeover. There's a hodgepodge of safeties who will be vying for playing time -- former Viking Madieu Williams is my pick of a newcomer who will emerge. It will be a total shock to see this secondary shine.

2) With that being said, Washington generated 41 sacks in 2011, tied for 10th in the NFL. The interchangeable depth on the defensive line (Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, Barry Coefield, Kedric Golston, Jarvis Jenkins and Chris Neild) and youth -- no player listed above is over the age of 30 -- could help cover up some gaping holes in the secondary.

3) I really hope Brian Orakpo has cancelled his atrocious Geico commercials, or has gotten better marketing people around him. The cavemen were so 2008, Brian.

4) Who is the second most valuable Redskin? I'd argue it's already Ryan Kerrigan. Last seasons statistics (63 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and that glorious interception for a touchdown in his first ever game) don't give the alert linebacker enough justice.

5) Is Mike Shanahan too old school to have another rookie (Kirk Cousins) back up RGIII? I highly doubt it. Expect Rex Grossman to be the second signal caller off the bench.

6) Candidates for breakout Redskins player include: Leonard Hankerson, Perry Riley, Evan Royster, Jarvis Jenkins, Josh Wilson,  Josh LeRibeus and my sleeper pick: fourth round pick Keenan Robinson. If Robinson sees ample playing time in substitution packages, the linebacker may wow with his hard hitting ways.

7) Roy Helu led the Redskins in rushing last season with 640 yards. I think there is a distinct possibility Robert Griffin III comes mighty close to that number during his rookie campaign. 

8) The vast majority of scrambling NFL quarterbacks began their rookie seasons on the bench. Check out the number of games started for these successful NFL gunslingers: Randall Cunningham (4), Roger Staubach (1), Donovan McNabb (6), Steve Young (5), Michael Vick (2). Sam Bradford and Cam Newton have set a new precedent for rookie quarterbacks.

9) The offensive player under the biggest microscope: left tackle Trent Williams. Is he ready to make the jump from a solid player to an elite cornerstone piece?

10) Is the offensive line really that bad? How much did Rex Grossman's lack of athletic ability have to do with sacks? In 2011, Washington allowed the 11th most sacks in the league (41.0). My guess is that number will almost be cut in half this season.
