WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -- It's been over 2 years since a major earthquake devastated the caribbean island of Haiti. The country is still facing infrastructure problems and medical shortages.
A medical team from Howard University Hospital continues to assist in Haiti providing medical care and teaching Haitian health care providers the latest medical techniques.
The team includes doctors from the departments of obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, internal medicine and pediatrics. Current medical students and recent medical school graduates also traveled to Haiti to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts.
The Howard University Hospital team teamed with the New York chapter of the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians (NOAH) and the Haitian American Alliance.
Shelly McDonald-Pinkett, M.D. says, "The patients lined up to see us. Some were dressed in the best clothing they had to come and visit a physician."
Roxanne Smith-White, M.D. says, "Their medical resources were drained over time and so they need an infrastructure that would build their medical resources back."
This is the third trip sponsored by Howard University hospital for its physicians. For Ashley Pinette, a medical student at Howard University hospital, this was his first trip. He is looking forward to going back soon.
Pinette says, "This is why I came to med school, this is why I want to be a doctor."
