WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Circle July 1 on your calendar. That date is when Metro's new fares officially take effect.
On the trains, the minimum off-peak fare will be $1.70. The maximum peak fare will be $5.75. That Peak-of-the Peak Charge is gone. Those rates are for people with SmarTrip cards.
Using a paper card will cost you a $1 surcharge.
Regular Metrobus fares will be $1.60 with a SmartTrip card. Fares will be $1.80 with cash.
Also, don't forget the new "Rush Plus" service begins June. That will bring more rush hour service to the Orange and Yellow Lines.
