TAUPO, New Zealand (WUSA)--Three Boston University students died and five other were injured when the van they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned near the town of Taupo. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m., New Zealand time, Saturday.
The university says that all but one of the students were enrolled in a Boston University study abroad program in Auckland. The remaining student, who was injured in the crash, is enrolled in a study abroad program in Sydney, Australia.
The U.S. Vice Consul in Auckland identified the deceased students as Daniela Lekhno (Class of 2013), Roch Jauberty (Class of 2014), and Austin Brashears (Class of 2013).
The university website does not identify the hometowns of the deceased students and says that the New Zealand Herald reports that the Bay of Plenty Crash Unit is investigating the accident.
Counseling services are being provided to students enrolled in the study abroad program in Auckland and at the school campus in Boston.
