Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson said Friday
that a previously agreed upon deal to build a new arena in the city for the
NBA's Kings has fallen apart.
Johnson, a former NBA point guard, also said that if owners want to renovate
the team's current building, Power Balance Pavilion, they won't get any help
from the city, according to an account of his press conference by the
Sacramento Bee.
The city, Kings and the NBA had announced a deal in February to build a $391
million arena and the Sacramento City Council adompted the plan.
Johnson said it was clear the Maloof family, which owns the team, had changed
its mind about building a new arena with the city, according to the Bee,
leaving the team's future in California's capital up in the air.
In an open letter, Johnson had written to the Maloof family that "the ball is
in your court."
