WASHINGTON (AP) - A landmark theatre in northwest Washington that helped launched the careers of Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye is reopening to the public.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Vincent Gray, among others, are scheduled to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated theater on April 9. The event is open to the public and will include live entertainment, tours and an unveiling of a Duke Ellington statue nearby.
The 100-year-old theater has been undergoing a restoration since September 2010. It opened as a first-of-its-kind showcase for black artists in 1910.
