WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has some food safety reminders for anyone going to big cookouts this July 4 weekend.

CLEAN: surfaces for prepping and cooking, and your hands before and after handling food...

SEPARATE: keep raw meats and poultry away from produce and cooked foods...

FOOD THERMOMETER: When you cook, use a food thermometer instead of judging by color.  The safe minimum internal temperature for steaks, roasts, chops and fish is 145-degrees Fahrenheit. For ground beef, it's 160-degrees.

CHILL: perishable food should not be left out more than two hours, and just one hour if it's over 90-degrees.
