1 man injured, 4 pets die in Springfield fire

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man was taken to the hospital and four family pets died after a fire at a house in Springfield on Thursday morning.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials say firefighters arrived at the scene in the 6900 block of Sydenstricker Road at approximately 8:50 a.m. They were able to extinguish the fire in approximately 20 minutes.

The three smoke alarms in the home did not work, according to officials.

One man was transported to Springfield Healthplex for smoke inhalation, according to officials.

Officials say some of the family's pets were killed in the fire. Four pets, one dog and three cats, died.

Six occupants have been displaced due to the fire and the Red Cross is helping them, say officials.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental and caused by a portable electric heater too close to a combustible.

Officials tell us the damage is estimated at $80,000.
