Man shot and killed by police in Montgomery County bank

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man was shot and killed in a Montgomery County bank on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

It happened around 11:54 a.m. at the Capital One Bank located at 8740 Arliss St., police said.

"Officers encountered an adult male inside the bank behaving erratically. The suspect failed to respond to officers' instructions, displayed a knife and threatened the safety of the officers. The suspect was shot by a Montgomery County Police Officer," police said in a news release.

Donovan Dayton, 54, of Silver Spring, was shot in the torso, police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the found two knives at the scene.

"As is standard procedure, the two involved 3rd District officers have been placed on paid administrative leave during the course of the investigation."

Police identified the officers Wednesday as Michael Damskey, with less than one year of service with the department, and Marcus Lee, with less than two years of service with the department.

The investigation surrounding the circumstances of this incident is continuing, police said.
