Shoppers hit local stores for Small Business Saturday

Owners are preparing for the customers to come to their businesses Saturday morning at National Harbor.

Shoppers all over the region are choosing to spend their money locally for Small Business Saturday.

It's a holiday created by American Express in 2010 to encourage people to spend money at small businesses.

National Harbor is home to over 160 locally owned stores. Many of the stores are holding special sales and have special discounts for Small Business Saturday.

Real-estate agent turned cupcake queen and Prince Georges County native Lakisa Taylor opened Pretty Girl cupcakes at National Harbor two years ago. While her path has been sprinkled with challenges, she said she has found her true passion.

"We are the ones who make dreams come true," said Taylor. "We connect with the community."

She is an inspiration to young female entrepreneurs everywhere. She now mentors young women interested in starting their own businesses.

"Just showing them how to get ahead, how to see a dream actually come true," said Taylor.

For local customers, seeing their neighborhood businesses thrive is a recipe for Small Business Saturday success.
