Shake, rattle and roll: Woodbridge woman turns 106

Woman celebrates 106 years of life.

WOODBRIDGE, VA (WUSA9) - Perhaps it's not how old you are, but how old you feel. And 106-year-old Laura Mallory feels good.

She was born in 1910 and celebrated her 106th birthday this month. That's right, 106.

"What's the secret to keep going all these years? Shake, rattle and roll," Mallory said.

Shake, rattle and roll is not exactly scientific, but it seems to work for Mallory.

Granted, she has good genes and, maybe just as important, a good sense of humor.

Yeah, she has jokes, but she also has an amazing story.

During World War II, Mallory was in the Army.

During the war effort, she was described as a "Rosie the Riveter" for US war ships. She was one of the few black women at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where she was a welder.

Standing only 5 feet 1 inches tall, she was often tapped to crawl into small spaces to weld.

At 106, she's not crawling. She's dancing.

Mallory is always the first on the dance floor at Potomac Place assisted living in Woodbridge where now lives.

She has outlived three husbands and she's still chasing. Mallory says what she's learned about the world is that it's wicked but it's wiser, giving her comfort to keep going.
