SC Boy Honored in Marvel Comic Book

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Nearly three months ago, Jacoby Latta died after being hit by a tree branch while playing in a park in Irmo.

The family is still dealing with the loss, but a Midlands artist is hoping he can bring joy to them through a comic book.

"He would pretend to be Captain America, he would wear Captain America outfits, everything was Captain America," said Jacoby's sister, Jasmine.

After three year old Jacoby Latta lost his life two months ago, his father Stuart wanted to find a way for his dream of becoming a super hero to come true, so he turned to a member of his church for help.

"It was definitely devastating to hear the news, we were definitely praying for the family of course," said Sanford Greene.

Stuart knew that Greene was an artist and had connections with other artists around the country. But little did he know, the Benedict College professor was actually an artist for Marvel Entertainment, the company that makes "The Avengers" comic books.

"I was working on the Avengers, they were huge fans of these characters, they loved Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and I'm drawing the book that has all these characters in it, so it was ironic, the very thing they were looking for, I was actually doing for the company. "

Greene spoke with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, and the dream became a reality.

"It was a long shot, but I knew that it was worth it to try and reach out to them and the editor in chief said, what do we need to do, what do they want to do."

There will be a dedication page for Jacoby in next week's issue of Uncanny Avengers, and he even gets to meet the hero's that he used to want to be like.

"I know for the family when they received the original it was emotional, I was emotional. There is going to be a lot of people that will see his story and I know it will impact them and tons of other people."

The comic book can be found in Midlands comic book stores on August 27th.
