Route 1 reopens after gas leak in Beltsville

BELTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Route 1 has reopened after being closed due to a significant gas leak Wednesday afternoon. The Sunnyside Road still remains closed.

Some businesses on Sunnyside have been evacuated.

Washington Gas was alerted about a gas line break along the 5000 block of Sunnyside Ave. around 12:40 p.m.

We're told a third party contractor not affiliated with Washington Gas hit a four inch plastic main while doing directional drilling.

Washington Gas crews remain on scene to make repairs to the line. They are continuing to work with first responders to ensure that the area remains safe.

Sky9 flew over the scene, where you can see the gas, or the dust that is being kicked up by the gas flowing in the air.
