Residents react to MPD officer charged with DUI while on duty

DC cop arrested for DUI while on duty

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Katherine Graham tells it like it is.

At 87 years old, the long-time resident of 18th Street SE does not hold back and when she heard a police officer was busted for drunk driving while on duty she held true to her reputation.

“We pay their salary. They work for us!” she said. "That should never happen. You have a job to do and if you can’t do it, well, don’t just collect a paycheck you have to work for and if you can’t work for it, don’t take it!”

Graham actually spotted the officer, but didn’t make the call Sunday just before 2:30 a.m.

She did peer out of her bedroom window and saw the parked cruiser by the train tracks, a spot known for its shady behavior.

WUSA9 saw empty beer cans littering the gutter. We don’t know why Officer Thompson was drinking on the job but when a supervisor investigated the call, he smelled alcohol on the officer’s breath.

Thompson later failed a field sobriety test.

"Everybody deserves a break when they do one wrong one time,” said Willy Williams.

But his neighbor Myesha disagreed.

“No,” she said. “We don’t get a second chance when we’re caught in our car drinking. And especially on the job that is not safe he could have aggressively did something to someone or anything could have happened.”

Police said the officer’s police powers have been revoked. The investigation is underway.
