Driver charged in I-95 police chase & crash

FORT BELVOIR, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia State Police have charged a driver who they say crashed a stolen van after a police chase on an Interstate 95 exit ramp Tuesday morning.

Twenty-two-year-old Sonia E. Lopez of Herndon, Va., has been charged with DUI, eluding police and grand larceny.

Police say Lopez was driving a Toyota Sienna that had been reported stolen from a Herndon residence.

Tuesday, Virginia State Police said that the van was traveling more than 100 miles per hour before it hit a guardrail and overturned on the Exit 156 ramp. The occupants of the Toyota Sienna were males and females between the ages of 15 and 23.

Lopez is still recovering from injuries sustained in the crash and remains at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

A 15-year-old female passenger, who suffered the most serious, life-threatening injuries in the crash, is still being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing and additional charges are pending.
