Police: man died in grass after getting out of car

LEXINGTON, Md. (WUSA9) -- St. Mary's County authorities are investigating after a man collapsed in grass near a roadway and later died on Sunday night.

At approximately 10:09 p.m. Sunday, authorities say deputies responded to a report of an unconscious person in the area of Pacific Drive in Lexington Park. They found 35-year-old Melvin J. Craddock of Lexington Park lying in the grass. He was unresponsive so deputies performed CPR until members of the Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad arrived. The rescue crew then continued to try to revive Craddock. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene, say officials.

Detectives determined that Craddock was driving his car when he stopped his vehicle in the roadway and got out. He then collapsed in the grass near the roadway, according to officials.

Officials tell us there were no signs of any injuries on Craddock. Family members told authorities that Craddock suffered from a recent medical condition.

Authorities say Craddock was transported to the Maryland State Medical Examiner's Office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.
