Officer opens fire on suspect near Safeway

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near a Safeway in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest D.C.

Around 1:44 p.m., police responded to the 3800 block of Georgia Avenue after reports of someone firing a handgun. When on the scene, police said an officer approached 22-year-old Marc Jeffers in a crowded area and told him to drop his weapon.

According to police, Jeffers refused commands and continued firing his weapon. That is when police said the officer fired his gun, hitting Jeffers.

Jeffers was arrested and transported to the hospital.

The shooting was caught on camera. 

Jeffers was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a pistol without a license, unlawful possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm, possession of an unregistered weapon and ammunition, and possession of a prohibited weapon. 

No court date has been set.
