ALEXANDRIA, VA (WUSA9) - ALEXANDRIA (WUSA9) -- Police are investigating the murder of a man near an Alexandria playground late Wednesday night.
According to a release from the Alexandria Police Department, officers responded to Powhatan Park in the 1200 block of Colonial Avenue around 9:24 p.m. Wednesday, after receiving a report of "shots fired". Once police arrived on the scene they found a 41-year-old man suffering from trauma to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbor Chris Dattarro lives down the road, and said he heard five gunshots.
"We heard a series of gunshots," he said. "And then a quick pause. And then another series of gunshots."
The identity of the man, who is not an Alexandria resident, is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The investigation is ongoing.
According to the Alexandria Police Department, this was the seventh homicide this year. Many neighbors told WUSA9 that there appears to be an increase in violent activity in that community.
"I just hope that it strikes a chord," said Chris Colligan, another neighbor. "With the community and the police, and that maybe something comes from it that will keep this under control."
Police are asking anyone who may have information regarding the incident to contact Detective Loren king with the Alexandria Police Department at 703-746-6689.
