Police focus on safety Memorial Day Weekend

OCEAN CITY, Md. (WUSA9) -- At the Maryland and Delaware beaches, WUSA 9 is focused on your local safety for the rest of the summer.

In Ocean City, Md., for instance, police have put up a whole lot of brand-new security cameras out on the boardwalk.

They've got a number of other safety initiatives, but they don't want to take your fun away. They want to make sure nothing gets out of hand because folks can do that on the holiday weekend.

Sometimes when folks are on vacation, they leave their common sense behind, which is why there's a constant battle to stay safe on the beach.

Overall, crime is down 13 percent in Ocean City.

Another major safety initiative is paying dividends to keep pedestrians safe. A new pedestrian walk on 55th Street is now installed and a new program to install landscaping to force pedestrians to use crosswalks is working. There were no deaths last year.

On the boardwalk there are signs up reminding visitors to keep the language clean and there are new bans on the sale of switch blade style knives and laser pointers.

The two major threats to people down in Ocean City aren't crime. It's crossing that big Coastal Highway and it's also on the water, which the beach patrol is responsible for.
