Police catch man responsible for 4 bank robberies

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WUSA9)-- A Hyattsville man was arrested Monday evening in connection with a string of bank robberies, Montgomery County police say.

At approximately 4:39 p.m., officers responded to the M&T Bank located at 10420 Montgomery Ave. in Kensington for a report of a bank robbery.

According to police, Jose Mercedes, of the 8400 block of Melissa Street, entered the bank and passed a note demanding money to the teller .

Mercedes received cash and left the bank, police say.

With the help of K9 officers, police located Mercedes in the 3200 block of McComas Ave. in Kensington and found proceeds from the bank on his person. Sky9 was over the scene during the arrest.

During questioning Mercedes also admitted to committing three other bank robberies:

  • M&T bank located at 10100 River Road in Potomac on December 21, 2013
  • M&T bank located at 7920 Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda on December 26, 2013
  • Wells Fargo bank located at 9812 Falls Road in Potomac on March 1, 2014

Mercedes is being charged for the robbery of all four banks.
