Md. man pleads guilty in stabbing deaths of his neighbors

ROCKVILLE, MD. (AP) - A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his longtime neighbors.

The Washington Post reports that 32-year-old Scott Tomaszewski entered the plea on Tuesday in Montgomery County Circuit Court. He admitted breaking into the Rockville home of 65-year-old Dick Vilardo and 67-year-old Judy Vilardo and killing the married couple. He faces a maximum sentence of life without parole.

Tomaszewski was arrested in Alaska, nearly a week after the May 2015 slayings. Police said he left for a cruise with his family just hours after the slayings.

His lawyer, John Kudel, says Tomaszewski is "shocked at what he did." Kudel initially filed a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity for Tomaszewski, but he later started negotiating a plea deal.
