Md. man charged for stealing $1K in coins from parking meters

SILVER SPRING, MD (WUSA9) - A man was charged after he was caught on surveillance video stealing coins from parking meters in a Silver Spring parking garage.

Stephen Murray, age 46, was charged with theft offenses.

Police say on Sept. 27 around 3:08 a.m., Murray opened several parking meters in a parking garage on Cameron Street and removed coins. Police were able to see Murray take the coins from surveillance video.

An employee told police that a special key is used to open the parking meters and police determined Murray was not an employee of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation.

On Sept. 30, police say an officer recognized Murray from the surveillance video. Once the officer stopped Murray, the officer found two large bags of quarters, totaling around $1,000. Police say Murray also had keys capable of opening the meters.
