Woman killed by driverless car in Md.

EDGEWATER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Anne Arundel County police say a 73-year-old woman was killed after she was run over by an empty car.

Police say Lee Sheila Mahoney was walking down the hill on Chesapeake Drive Monday when a parked Ford Mustang began to drift "driverless" down the hill behind her.

Mahoney was hit by the car, which came to rest on top of her. The owner of the car, 23-year-old David Adam Garman, saw it moving down the hill and ran from his house to retrieve it. Police say he started the car and began to back up, unaware that Lee was underneath.

Lee was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the primary cause of the crash is driver error, according to officials.

Police say the driver failed park the vehicle with its wheels turned properly towards the curb with the parking brake set. The investigation is ongoing.
