Woman dead in Md. vehicle collision

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- One woman is dead and several other people are in the hospital after a fatal collision that happened in Hagerstown, Md. Thursday afternoon.

Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to the area of Leitersburg Pike and Orchid Drive in Hagerstown at 3 p.m. for the report of a personal injury collision, according to authorities.

Police said a 2004 Ford Freestar minivan was going west on Leitersburg Pike with a 26-year-old woman, Erica Jean Rodriguez, of Hagerstown and four children.

Rodriguez drove into the opposite lane of travel and right into the path of a 2005 Hyundai Tucson going east, authorities said.

Police said 55-year-old Esther Marie Bitner of the 21000 block of Smithsburg Leitersburg Pike was driving the vehicle. The vehicles crashed head on, police said.

Authorities said a 34-year-old passenger in the Hyundai, Jessica Wyoming Stanley of Boonsboro had to be extricated by the fire crew.

Police said a 13-year-old passenger in the vehicle was able to get out herself. According to authorities, Rodriguez and the four children in the van were able to get out of the vehicle.

Everybody was taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries.

According to authorities, Bitner died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.
